Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Five Pupils and Bus Driver in Kaburengu
In a devastating incident along the Eldoret-Webuye highway in Kakamega County, five pupils and a bus driver lost their lives in a collision involving a school bus and a truck in the Kaburengu area.
This unfortunate incident occurred on a Saturday evening, a mere three weeks after another accident took place on the same road, resulting in the loss of four lives when a truck collided with a motorcyclist and three pedestrians.
The accident, which took place at approximately 6:15 PM, involved a school bus owned by Ebenezer Complex Academy from Busia County. A truck carrying gravel lost control, crashing into the school bus and forcing it off the road.
According to reports from Matete police officers, four of the pupils and their driver tragically passed away at the scene, while another pupil succumbed to injuries at Webuye Level Four Hospital, where they were undergoing treatment. At least ten individuals, including two teachers, have been admitted to Webuye Level Hospital with various injuries.
The pupils and teachers were returning to Busia from Eldoret, where they had embarked on an academic trip.
Following this heartbreaking incident, Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula called upon President William Ruto to intervene and direct the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) to redesign the notorious road in order to prevent further fatalities. Savula urged for a similar dual-carriage system as the one implemented on the Salgaa road, allowing trucks to have a separate lane to enhance safety.
Savula further announced that within a week's time, the county government would relocate all traders conducting business along the road, as part of an effort to prevent further casualties on the highway.
Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, through his communication team, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those who survived.
Meanwhile, the police are actively searching for the truck driver, who allegedly fled the scene.
The bodies of the deceased pupils and the bus driver have been transported to the Webuye Hospital Mortuary.
